9. Power(Point)fully Flipping the Classroom

I personally think the idea of a flipped classroom is a great idea but I am not sure it is realistic. The idea is that instead of students just listening to the teacher during class, they are discussing the subject with other students and the teacher so that they are more actively learning and involving themselves. Although this may sound very proactive and beneficial for the students, this would require that students read and follow recordings before class each day. This would make it hard for some students to keep up and all students would need to have the motivation to actually do the research so that they can contribute to the conversations.               I am going to review Edutopia. This site is basically just a website directed towards teachers for their own professional development. Instead of it just being a site for teachers to look at, it is a community. All the teachers can chat and share stories. They can share their mistakes they've made as a teacher and also techniques that have worked well for them. It is a nice way to get new ideas for the classroom.

This site also includes videos and articles for professional development. It has a lot of videos and articles about how to make the classroom more technologically advanced. It includes certain projects for teachers to give to students, for example, "The Kindness Project". I think this website is great because it gives teachers ideas and ways to make the classroom more beneficial for their students and for themselves.           I have not finished my PowerPoint project yet but it is a little challenging. While I have used PowerPoint all my life, it is tough to navigate through it sometimes and figure out all the certain applications that the assignment tells us to use. I am glad that we have this assignment and skill check though because PowerPoint is very important when you are a teacher. It is important to have for lectures and projects in the classroom. Learning all these special effects will help get my PowerPoint more interactive and entertaining for students which will come in handy. Here is a screenshot to the first slide of my PowerPoint. I used Halloween theme because I wish Halloween wasn't over.

  1. The Halloween theme on your Powerpoint is super cute! I agree with your statements on Powerpoint, even though I've spent a good deal of time with the program, it can still baffle me at times.

  2. I agree on everything! I thought that the flipped classroom was a great idea but might require too much involvement from parents! Also, I thought that the PowerPoint project was tricky because it required being extremely concise.

  3. I agree that the power point is a it challenging, its tedious work but I think the statements you made about making the classroom more technological are interesting. You can learn in a lot of different ways with the most up to date technology.

  4. I think you made a great point when discussing the effectiveness of the teacher-student classroom. Maybe that idea could be taken to student who are capable of handling it, so students don't feel discriminated against.

  5. I think your title for this blog is very cute! I happen to disagree with the idea of a flipped classroom being completely negative but you brought up great points to support your stand. I do agree with your evaluation of the Power Point project on it being a little difficult to navigate and work.

  7. The flipped classroom is great in theory but I do agree that it is more likely for the child to fall behind. It could also make the workload worse for those students who have after-school activities. I also agree with you that the PowerPoint project is confusing and can be hard to navigate at times.

  8. I agree with your thoughts about Powerpoint. I think it is difficult to navigate through the page, and it takes a bit of time to get everything set up how you want it. Your first slide is very cute though!

  10. I agree that it might be challenging for students to keep up with the work, but at the same time its hard for students to do that now. If you think about switching it around and having them learn outside the classroom, it would make it much more possible for teachers to spend more time on helping students individually. I also really like the design of your PowerPoint

  11. I agree, the flipped classroom would put more work on the student before coming to class. I also like the Edutopia website because having other teacher sources of information is a good reference for first year teachers to see how a normal classroom is run.

  13. I know that, as a student, when a teacher tells me to go home and read a chapter as opposed to doing a physical graded assignment I am significantly less motivated to complete the task. In a flipped classroom situation, I feel like many students will feel the same about having to listen to online lecture. Many might just skip it and try to wing the assignments taught in class.

  14. The Halloween theme is great, I'm with you I wish Halloween wasn't over. I think Edutopia sounds like a great website. Being able to talk to more experienced teachers about how they teach things in a classroom is always nice, especially when you're first starting out.

  15. I can definitely relate to your current struggle with powerpoint! I also thought I was very familiar with it, but this assignment helped me realise that there were certain aspects of the application that I had no idea how to navigate. To be honest, I'm happy I'm realising this now and not when I'm trying to put together a powerpoint for my students in the future!

  16. Wow! I didn't realize PBS has a separate media site. What great collection of various media FREE for students and teachers. I clipped the site (evernote) for future use. Good find.
